Coniston, situated in the S.W. corner of the Lake District, is an ideal centre for a relaxing holiday. It is away from the busy centre of the Lakes, yet still in the heart of the mountains. It remains a working village, where tourism has not enveloped traditional local industries like the slate quarries and the hill farms. The area is a haven for walkers and climbers, with routes to suit everyone. If you feel like a more relaxing day, why not take a self-drive motor boat on the lake, or cruise in Victorian splendour on the beautifully restored steam yacht "Gondola" and call in at "Brantwood", the magnificent home of John Ruskin, the famous Victorian essayist and philosopher, which has wonderful views back across the lake to the village and mountains behind.
