If you feel like a less strenuous day, why not take a self drive motor boat on the Lake or cruise in Victorian splendour on the beautifully restored steam yacht 'Gondola', or the beautiful traditional lake craft run by the Coniston Launch Company both operators making scheduled visits to 'Brantwood', the home of John Ruskin, the19th century critic and social. The world famous Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature railway will take you on a delightful seven mile journey between the coast and the foot of England's highest mountains.
The Lakes are steeped in history; The Romans had a port at Ravenglass, and a fort high up on Hardknott Pass, which has now been excavated. There are a number of stately homes, castles, historical buildings and gardens within easy reach of Coniston. Other places to visit include Hilltop, Beatrix Potter's home at Sawrey (5m). Dove Cottage, Wordsworth's home at Grasmere (11m). Steam Boat Museum at Windermere (12m). Forestry Centre and Theatre in the Forest, Grisedale (7m). Brockhole Lake District Visitors Centre. The new Ruskin and Coniston Village Museum.
